Yellow teeth are inelegant and unattractive
The food and drink we consume are partly responsible for the colour of our teeth. On the one hand this is because they simply colour the enamel, while on the other hand they contribute to the enamel’s thinning due to their acidity.
Teeth can loose their whiteness for various reasons, such as ageing, genetic factors, insufficient dental care and high tea or coffee consumption as well as smoking. High antibiotic consumption, climate changes, infections or metabolic disorders can also discolour teeth.
Effective healthy home tricks to whiten teeth:
Strawberries contain a high amount of vitamin C, which helps whiten teeth.
How to use: Pulp some strawberries and cream your teeth carefully with it; leave it on for 5 minutes then rinse it off with water. Repeat this twice a week and after a few weeks you will see the desired effect, your teeth will be whiter and brighter!
Like strawberries, lemons whiten our teeth because of their vitamin C content.
For many, just hearing the word ‘lemon’ triggers saliva production in the mouth, because we are talking about a sour fruit.
How to use: rub your teeth with lemon peel or gargle its juice. The lemon’s acidic properties whiten the teeth, but don’t overdo it because the same properties can harm the teeth’s dentine layer and possibly cause damage at a later date.
Basil leaves also have whitening properties and in addition provide protection against gum problems such as periodontal disease. Place some leaves in the sun for 1 or 2 hours and once they have dried out grind them up. Mix the ground leaves into your toothpaste and then brush your teeth with it. We can also make toothpaste from basil leaves and mustard oil.

Using fresh orange peel regularly to clean our teeth also helps to prevent and remove discoloration. Every evening rub orange peel on your teeth before going to bed. The calcium and vitamin C in the orange peel fight bacteria during the night. After a few weeks have passed you will notice spectacular results, your teeth will be brighter, healhier and whiter. You can also use dried orange peel instead of fresh.
Apples scrub teeth clean in the same way as a toothbrush and eating them regularly will help to make your teeth whiter than ever.
How to use: Try to eat at least two apples a day! Make sure to chew the apple properly, so its acids and fibre rich flesh have enough time to remove any yellow spots. We can also consume crunchy vegetables such as carrots, broccoli and cucumber.
Methods we can use at home are not effective by themselves in the long run and unchecked usage may pose a risk to our teeth, gums and body. As a consequence, only employ these methods if you really can’t afford teeth whitening treatment and are prepared to wait for your teeth to become whiter over a longer period of time.
